The days are growing colder, the nights longer and soon the holidays will be here. However, before carving the Thanksgiving turkey or decorating the Christmas tree, the clocks must be turned back.

That's right, daylight savings time is almost at an end, the practice of which has been observed in the United States since World War I. It started as a way to save energy for war production and was extended in 2007 by four weeks as part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005.

This Sunday, Nov. 3, all clocks should be set back an hour. The yearly setting back of the clock is also the perfect opportunity to change smoke detector batteries to assure fire safety in the coming winter months.

Likewise, as the sun sets earlier each day, it becomes increasingly important for motorists to remain alert while traveling in the hours of darkness. Pedestrians are also advised to wear bright or reflective clothing after sunset.
