The 522nd Special Operations Squadron ran their first joint training mission Sept. 26 over northern New Mexico.

The 522 SOS real-world goal is to plan, prepare and execute missions to directly support special operations commanders through day and night low level infiltration/exfiltration, helicopter/tilt-rotor aerial refueling, and aerial delivery resupply of special operations forces. They support many special operations units from all branches of the military while operating the MC-130J Commando II aircraft.

Though they execute more than 20 training missions per week, this is the first joint training the 522 SOS has ever conducted. Marine members from the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, Camp Lejeune, N.C. were on the receiving end of this exercise.

The training was designed to practice refueling at high altitudes and included a simulated airdrop of supplies.

"This training was an opportunity for the 522 SOS to demonstrate its MC-130Js are an instrument of Air Force Special Operations Command and will integrate well with the joint force," said Lt. Col. John Buchanan, 522 SOS commander. "I am proud to report the training was an absolute success."
