The 27th Special Operations Maintenance Operations Squadron was inactivated during a ceremony here July 18, as part of an Air Force-wide restructuring initiative to better allocate company and field grade officers to necessary positions.

In a time honored tradition, Maj. Clifford Scruggs, 27 SOMOS commander, relinquished command of the squadron to Col. David Wiesner, 27th Special Operations Maintenance Group commander, who furled and cased the colors, signifying the official inactivation of the unit.

Members of the 27 SOMOS were charged with the responsibility of balancing fleet health with sortie production for all aircraft assigned to the 27th Special Operations Wing, coordinating and monitoring maintenance activities, maintaining aircraft status and serving as the focal point for aircraft generations and exercises.

Additionally, personnel developed flying schedules, provided analysis of production metrics, training for all maintenance personnel, and monitored financial, manning and facilities programs for the 27 SOMXG.

The 27 SOMOS was created before the Air Force was an independent branch of service. Its lineage dates back to 1943, when it was known as the 27th Station Compliment Squadron at Kellogg Field, Mich. The squadron was disbanded shortly thereafter, only to be reinstituted at the 27 SOW nearly five decades later as the 27th Special Operations Logistics Support Squadron. The unit was once again christened under a new name in 2002, the 27th Maintenance Operations Squadron, before finally adopting its current name five years later.

"Although the 27 SOMOS will be inactivated today, the proud Airmen who comprise it will still provide consistent, world class support to the maintenance group, allowing them to continue improving and enabling combat capability anytime, anywhere," Wiesner said.

Before rendering their final salute, Air Commandos listened attentively to Scruggs's last address as commander of the 27 SOMOS.

"Today is a day for mixed emotions," Scruggs said. "I am deeply saddened to see this squadron inactivated, but I am confident that the Air Force is paving a positive way forward. Throughout the past year, I have been extremely honored and humbled to have served alongside each and every one of you, and I am confident that you will continue our proud mission."
