CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- Disasters often happen quickly and with little warning, forcing people to evacuate neighborhoods or confining them to their home. Do not wait until disaster strikes to start planning—now is the time to put disaster preparations in place and Balfour Beatty Communities has a variety of tips to help members of the Cannon community.
Family disaster plan
· Discuss the types of hazards that could affect your family
· Know your home’s vulnerability to storm surge, flooding, earthquakes and high wind
· Locate a safe room or the safest area in your home for each type of disaster. In certain circumstances, the safest areas may not be a home, but elsewhere within the community
· Determine escape routes from homes and places for family members to meet
· Establish an out-of-state friend as a central contact so all family members have a single point of contact to check in with
· Make a plan for what to do with pets if an evacuation is necessary
· Stock non-perishable emergency supplies and a disaster safety kit
What to include in a disaster supply kit
· Water – at least one gallon daily per person for three to seven days
· Food – enough for three to seven days, non-perishable packaged or canned foods and juices, foods appropriate for infants or the elderly, snack foods, non-electric can opener, cooking tools and fuel, disposable plates and utensils
· Blankets and pillows
· Clothing – seasonal, rain gear, sturdy shoes
· First Aid Kit, medicines and prescription drugs
· Flashlight and batteries
· Cash – banks and ATMs may not be open or available for extended periods
· Toys, books and games
· Important documents – insurance, medical records, bank account numbers, Social Security Card, etc.; store in waterproof container or watertight re-sealable plastic bag
· Pet Care items – proper identification, immunization records, medications, food and water supply, carrier or cage and muzzle or leash
