The potential exists for a protracted period of hazardous weather conditions this evening and into the New Year’s weekend.

A cold front will sweep through the Southern Plains tonight, bringing cold northeasterly winds, light snow, patchy fog and the high chance for an icy precipitation mix.

Everyone is advised to dress appropriately for the wind chill. Fog and light snow will develop after midnight tonight, with a gradual accumulation of one to two inches of snow throughout the Dec. 30. In addition to the snowfall, there will be a slight chance for freezing and mixed precipitation during the day tomorrow, which could result in hazardous driving conditions.

The potential for snow and mixed precipitation is scheduled to continue into Wednesday evening, diminishing slightly by Thursday morning.

Long-range outlook: There may be a brief reprieve the morning of Jan. 1, but it will be quickly followed by the next round of winter weather. Potential for freezing rain and snow exists Thursday evening and into Friday. The primary hazard will be icy roads across much of the local area.

Please keep an eye on the weather before planning your travel this week and stay safe. The Cannon Weather Flight will continue to monitor and provide updates as the long weekend approaches.

Hazards for the local area:

·        Snow, icy mixed precipitation, mist or fog

·        Snow (greater than half an inch, less than two inches)

·        Snowy and icy roadways

·        Poor visibility in fog or mist
