Holocaust Days of Remembrance Published April 13, 2015 By 2nd Lt. Erin Recanzone 27th Special Operations Wing Public Affairs CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- Members of the 27th Special Operations Wing have the opportunity to commemorate and reflect on the tragic events that occurred throughout the Holocaust during this year’s Days of Remembrance, April 12-19. The Holocaust Days of Remembrance is an annual week-long commemoration established by the United States Congress and observed by communities throughout the U.S. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the liberation of concentration camps, which according to Capt. Fred Meyer, 3rd Special Operations Squadron flight commander, makes these events more relevant to military members today. “I believe that our role as military members is just as important today as it was for the members during the liberation” Meyer said. “Conveying this through the different events is an important aspect I am trying to bring to the observation week.” In order to honor the memory of the millions of people killed during the Holocaust, as well as honor the survivors and soldiers who bore witness to these events, the base chapel will have displays in classrooms 7, 8, 9, and 10 available for viewing throughout the week. Cannon Air Force Base will also host a Holocaust Remembrance Day Ceremony, or Yom HaShoah as it is referred to in Hebrew, from 3-4 p.m. April 16 in the base chapel main sanctuary. Other base events will include a candle lighting ceremony at 9 a.m. April 13 in the base chapel main sanctuary, a showing of “The Book Thief” at 6 p.m. April 15 in the base movie theater, and displays throughout the week in Building 600, the dining facility, and the base library.
