Air Commandos and their families endured a colossal storm that caused severe flooding to homes and damage to facilities and vehicles late Monday night. In the midst of the pounding rain and damaging winds, members of Team Cannon came together to ensure the safety of their teammates and families.

“Twenty-five families were evacuated and relocated to friend’s homes, hotels and billeting,” said Col. Heather Buono, 27th Special Operations Mission Support Group commander. “Volunteers from our Balfour Beatty Communities partners, members of the 27th Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron, Logistics Readiness Squadron, Maintenance Group and dedicated volunteer teammates came together to assist in the evacuation process.”

Whispering Winds golf course experienced severe flooding, as the 18-hole course is currently has 15 holes submerged in stagnant water, taking out 600 feet of fencing as a repercussion.

“The 27th Special Operations Security Forces Squadron did an exceptional job providing security throughout the storm and its aftermath,” said Buono. “Our 27th SOSFS Air Commandos are standing guard amidst the damaged areas to ensure the safety of the base and its occupants.”

“Communication via social media platforms was also commendable,” she continued. “Having the updates and vital information quickly shared by the men and women of Cannon was essential.”

As the ongoing assessment of the damages continues, Air Commandos from every corner of Cannon are lending a hand to ensure base safety and mission readiness.
“We are assessing the flood and water damage on base after the recent significant and abnormally heavy rainfall,” said Col. Ben Maitre, 27th Special Operations Wing commander. “As we preserve our mission operations and readiness, one of our priorities is to take care of our Air Commandos and families that were affected. In addition to ensuring support services and facilities are fully restored, we are working closely with Balfour Beatty Communities to ensure that our families have a safe and dry place to stay.”
