Update: After the storm Published May 7, 2015 By Airman 1st Class Chip Slack 27th Special Operations Wing Public Affairs Cannon Air Force Base, N.M. -- Air Commandos and their families endured a record-setting storm that caused severe flooding to homes and damage to essential facilities late Monday night. As the rain settled and the winds died down, members of Team Cannon assessed the damages the base sustained. According to the 27th Special Operations Airfield Operations Squadron, the previous record of rainfall in a twenty-four hour period was 4.8 inches; a record that dates back to 1951. With the total accumulation of rainfall Cannon Air Commandos experienced, that record was surpassed with an overwhelming buildup of 5.4 inches of rain – in addition to gusts of wind exceeding 43 knots. Forty-eight facilities reported minor to major rainfall-related damages. Buildings on the flightline such as the 26th Special Tactics Squadron experienced up to 4 inches of standing water in their facilities. While damages are still being reported and assessed, Air Commandos from every corner of Cannon are lending a hand to ensure base safety and mission ready status. “This is a Cannon issue,” said Lt. Col. Joyce Storm, 27th Special Operations Mission Support Group deputy. “This is not a privatized housing issue, or an individual squadron issue. This is a moment for every individual agency on base to come together and face a problem head on.”
