0With a round of cheers from Air Commandos, families, community members and the many team members who turned a vision into a reality, a ribbon-cutting ceremony hailing the result of months of renovation reopened the doors of the Drop Zone to members of the 27th Special Operations Wing Thursday.

"This was a collaborative project,” said Lt. Col. David Nuckles, 27th Special Operations Force Support Squadron commander. “We could not have done it on our own and we are thankful to the Cannon community for coming together to make this all possible.”

The opening found the facility full of Airmen and families enjoying food, beverages, games, and most importantly according to 27th SOW Vice Commander Col. Matt Smith, each other’s company.

“This is a space where all of our Air Commandos can gather,” Smith said before cutting the ribbon. “When we have a dedicated space for our Airmen to come together, it makes all of Cannon community stronger.”

The Drop Zone will address Cannon’s non-stop effort to improve quality of life across the base, employing a Community Commons concept to join several facilities under one roof and bring a wide variety of entertainment options to Air Commandos and their families.

Touring the second floor of the building, Air Commandos discovered a multipurpose room that will cover everything from needle felting to theater classes, a movie theater, gaming room and recording studio.

"We are thrilled with the facility and the quality of life improvements that it brings to all of us at Cannon," said Terese Harris, 27th SOFSS deputy.

Located near several base dormitories and collocated with the DZ Aquatic Center, Force Support leaders are confident that the Drop Zone will remain popular long into the future.

“The Drop Zone is the newest great gathering space on base,” Harris said. "From pizza to Pac-Man, there is something here for everyone."
