The 27th Special Operations Mission Support Group bid farewell to Col. Heather Buono and welcomed its next commander, Col. Douglas Gilpin on May 29.

During a ceremony held on base, Buono relinquished command to Gilpin in a ceremony several hours before her retirement from the Air Force after 25 years of distinguished service.

Gilpin, a Salado, Texas native, was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1993 upon graduating from the U.S. Air Force Academy with his degree in civil engineering. He has held several base, major command, and headquarters Air Force-level engineer positions, as well as twice commanding civil engineer squadrons.

As the commander of the 27th SOMSG, Gilpin oversees six diverse squadrons, all geared toward providing base support and services activities to ensure mission readiness of the 27th Special Operations Wing including: facility construction and maintenance, housing, food service, law enforcement, fire protection, explosive ordnance disposal, disaster preparedness, communications, personnel support, lodging, contracting, transportation, logistics plans and more.

“I am honored to serve as your next leader at one of the most relevant wings in the Air Force,” Gilpin stated. “I look forward to continuing our legacy of being the most elite fighting force as we continue to grow this premier installation.”
