The 27th Special Operations Medical Group said goodbye to Col. Jeffrey Gillen before welcoming its new commander, Col. John Mammano on May 29.

Mammano is the former Deputy Command Surgeon for Headquarters, United States European Command and served as the lead advisor to the Logistics Directorate and Command Surgeon for Global Health Engagement, Joint Medical Operations, Plans and Exercises, Force Health Protection and Joint Medical Lines of Activity for Theater Security Cooperation.

He transferred to the United States Air Force as a Medical Service Corps Officer in 1996. Mammano has served at the base, major command, headquarters, USAF and Joint Command in a variety of healthcare leadership positions. He also supported Operation Iraqi Freedom by deploying to Balad Air Base, Iraq, where he served as the Administrator for the Air Force Theater Hospital.

As the new commander of the 27th SOMDG, Mammano will help provide medical care to Air Commandos of the 27th Special Operations Wing, and a total beneficiary population of 13,500 in the northeastern region of New Mexico and the panhandle of northern Texas. The medical personnel of the 27th SOMDG ultimately ensure Cannon’s Air Commandos attain and sustain the highest level of medical readiness and force health protection.

“We live in very trying times; we have faced sequestration, budget cuts and growing global threats,” stated Mammano. “You may be asking yourselves whether your fellow Air Commandos are ready for these challenges, and I say to you: absolutely. I am making it my top priority to take care of our warriors and their families so that we are fully equipped to take on whatever we are faced with.”
