One of Cannon’s teens was recently selected from among several local outstanding youth as part of an ongoing scholarship competition.

Leiahna Utigard, daughter of Candice Utigard, 551st Special Operations Squadron illustrator, and Tyson Utigard, 318th Special Operations Squadron aircraft mechanic, competed against other members of the Boys & Girls Club of America for the New Mexico Youth of the Year title and a $5,000 college scholarship from the organization.

“I was extremely honored to be chosen to represent the kids of Cannon’s Youth Programs in this year’s competition,” stated Leiahna. “I am sure there were many other deserving candidates; to be selected as the winner is very humbling.”

The Youth of the Year program honors our nation’s most awe-inspiring young people on their path to great futures and encourages all kids to lead, succeed and inspire. As the newest Youth of the Year for Cannon Youth Programs, Leiahna is considered a true example of an extraordinary young woman. She is recognized by BGCA for her leadership, service, academic excellence and dedication to live a healthy lifestyle.

“Leiahna has been a member of the Cannon Air Force Base Youth Programs for many years now; we have been honored to see her grow into the outstanding woman that she is today,” said Daniel McBride, 27th Special Operation Force Support Squadron Youth Programs director. “Leiahna’s greatest attribute, to me, is her caring spirit; she never hesitates to help out the younger children in the program.”
