CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- With more than a month of full-swing operations to its credit, the newly-renovated Drop Zone continues to provide those who live and work at the 27th Special Operations Wing with a place to play.
Home to the Tailgate Sports Lounge restaurant, a computer and gaming center, an art studio with a variety of classes available, and a host of other attractions, the Drop Zone is quickly garnering a reputation as Cannon’s entertainment catch-all.
“The community's response has been so positive,” said Ms. Terese Harris, 27th Special Operations Force Support Squadron deputy. “We love to see Airmen and their families enjoying the space that was designed just for them.”
Perhaps the most popular addition made to the Drop Zone over the last several months, the Tailgate Sports Lounge is both owned and operated by the 27th SOFSS.
“Operating a sit-down restaurant here at Cannon has been a challenge for our team,” Harris said. “But we believe we're bringing a major quality of life improvement to Cannon's Airmen and their families, so it is worth all the hard work.”
Because Cannon is home to a diverse collection of Air Commandos with varied interests, the Drop Zone was renovated to reflect the pursuits of its patrons.
“It is targeted to everyone,” said Capt. Rachel Flannery, 27th Special Operations Force Support Squadron Sustainment Services Flight commander. “It’s a great place for families to come to. We’ve got the pool and the game room, and upstairs we have the video gaming room where Airmen can either play games with people online or with each other. Downstairs you’ll find the Tailgate Sports Lounge as well as information about upcoming events and tours.”
For those who have yet to explore one of Cannon’s hottest commodities, Harris had just one piece of wisdom to impart.
“If you haven't tried our wings yet, you need to,” Flannery said. “Whether you want to watch a UFC fight or play Texas Hold'em, be on the lookout for some fun upcoming programs.”
