After months of preparation and planning, the gates of Cannon opened to the public in the early morning to kick off the 2015 Cannon Appreciation Day and Open House, Saturday.

The event commenced with the first-ever “Run Forrest, Run” 5K on the airfield’s main runway, followed by the Cannon Thunder auto show, door prizes for Airmen sponsored by local community partners and a local band showcase that highlighted several talented musicians.

As members of the local community enjoyed food provided by the 27th Special Operations Force Support Squadron, Air Commandos were afforded the opportunity to give their community partners a behind-the-scenes view of Cannon’s aerial assets and access to knowledgeable subject matter experts. Those in attendance were able to walk the length of the flightline stopping at various booths to participate in games and purchase souvenirs, or visit static displays to learn about different aircraft capabilities.

Following an all-day local band showcase was a performance by the Lt. Dan Band, featuring Gary Sinise. Weather delays, rain and hail caused their performance to be relocated into a hangar, but the flexibility of our Air Commandos made the event a success.

"By hosting our annual Open House in conjunction with Cannon Appreciation Day, we were able to celebrate the long standing partnership Cannon Air Force Base has with the High Plains community," said Col. Ben Maitre, 27th Special Operation Wing commander. "This event gave us a common venue to continue strengthening the connections between service members, families, and members of the community. It also allowed us to demonstrate the unique capabilities and qualities of our Air Commandos."
