Practice makes perfect; Cannon's firefighters therefore took time to perfect response skills during a routine training exercise Aug. 4.

Seasoned emergency responders planned a mock scenario at the munitions storage area, challenging crews to quickly access the situation and safely clear staged facilities.

Exercising response capabilities is nothing new to Team Cannon; whether base-wide or inter-agency, conducting routine training is an ideal way to keep Air Commandos qualified in their career fields and ready to own the fight forward when called upon.

While Cannon firefighters were in no actual danger, evaluators were on site injecting additional benchmarks to add to the realism of the exercise scenario.

"These training exercises allow our teams to hone and maintain mission critical rescue skills to prepare for the event of real world situations," stated Master Sgt. Doug Barron, 27th Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron assistant chief of operations. "This allows our wing to meet its objective of providing combat ready forces and ensuring our fire dawgs are prepared to respond at a moment’s notice – any time, any place."

And crews were indeed challenged by the day's heat, complexity of the exercise location, and physical demands of fully gearing up and managing excess weight fire rescue equipment.
