In case you missed the August Quality of Life meeting, here are some updates to current projects, information on closed items and a look at upcoming events:

27th Special Operations Force Support Squadron
- The squadron is looking into installing additional sit-up bars in the fitness center; bars are scheduled to be installed no later than Aug. 14.
- The 27th SOFSS is also working to improve wireless internet in lodging; once current testing is satisfactory, the remainder of the project will be finalized.
- Cannon’s dining facility is slated to reopen in late October pending construction; at that point, Cannon’s unaccompanied dorm Airmen will be able to utilize their meal cards at other FSS-operated eating facilities.

27th Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron
- Civil engineering is working with Balfour Beatty Communities to finalize installation of a water purification dispenser in the Chavez housing area by this fall; the final location is still being decided.
- Engineers have engaged with contractors to establish a regular mowing routine for Doc Stewart Park every Friday to ensure grassy areas stay maintained.

Combined efforts
- FSS and CE are working to provide additional pet-friendly temporary lodging facilities; several additional rooms should be completed by Sept. 4.
- The archery range on base is now fully operational; currently waiting on signs to be placed that will help direct those wanting to utilize the area.

The Defense Commissary Agency
- Deli and bakery services reopened at the Commissary June 16; rotisserie chicken is still on hold until a new contract is acquired. During this time, sushi operations will be reconsidered, but that service will not be in place for several months.

Of note, there are several upcoming events within the local area. To help Air Commandos and their families stay informed about local events, the “High Plains Happenings” Facebook page was created.

“This page is not affiliated with the Air Force, but will directly benefit our Air Commandos and their families as much as it will benefit our neighboring cities,” said Tiffany Campion, 27th Special Operations Wing Public Affairs Chief of Community Engagement. “Our base consistently has plenty of things going on; there are a number of private organizations that put together outstanding fundraisers for worthy causes that often fall off the radar.”

“There are just as many wonderful events going on in Clovis and Portales that we often do not hear about for any number of reasons,” she continued. “This Facebook page is designed to create a consolidated hub of information to help everyone realize how much there is to do within the High Plains region.”

Remember, every group and squadron has appointed representatives that should be used to voice concerns or bring up ideas at these monthly forums. Members can also communicate directly through the 27th Special Operations Wing’s Facebook page or Commander’s Action Link via the Cannon website.

The next Quality of Life meeting will be held on Sept. 15 at 12:30 p.m. in the Landing Zone.
