Air Commandos storm the stage

Every assignment is what you make of it -- a phrase that most Air Commandos continuously hear but many do not put into practice.

Airman 1st Class Nelson Blackshear, 27th Special Operations Support Squadron commander support staff, saw a missing avenue for creativity and fun, and decided to launch the “Cannon Theatre Program” for not only himself, but his fellow wingmen.

Before joining the Air Force, Blackshear was enrolled in film school at the Art Institute of Charleston, South Carolina and had a passion for the stage. When he heard of the possibility of starting a theatre program at Cannon, he jumped at the opportunity.

“I was approached by Capt. Thomas Williams, 27th Special Operations Wing Area defense counsel, and his wife, Autumn, about our shared interests and the chance for me to be involved in the program,” said Blackshear. “I was sold before they even had to ask.”

While members of Team Cannon are afforded many opportunities here during their assignment, involvement in a theater program was not one of them. Blackshear, Williams and Autumn realized that there were a lot of individuals wanting to get involved in or rediscover the arts but did not have a way of doing so.

“Having this program on base is very beneficial to those who share the same passions,” Blackshear said.

The “Cannon Theatre Program” is open to active-duty members as well as dependents. Noting that variety is a key factor for this program, both children and adults are encouraged to get involved.

From acting, lighting, sound, production design and set-up to make up and costume design, this program offers many ways for those interested in the arts to get involved and be a part of the program.

“Joining is easy,” said Blackshear. “All you have to do is show up and sign up. There are many different positions we need to fill in order to get a production up and running. All we expect from those who join is to show up, do their part and have fun in the process.”
