Eastern New Mexico University hosted a military appreciation day to honor the men and women who have served and are currently serving in America's armed forces. Air Commandos and their families were invited to attend a free football game at Blackwater Draw Stadium in Portales as the ENMU Greyhounds took on the Angelo State University Rams, Oct. 24.

Several service members from Cannon Air Force Base attended the game to show their gratitude for the support from the local community, and to cheer for the Greyhounds.

“Cannon Air Force Base enjoys a strong and lasting relationship with the local community,” said Col. Ben Maitre, 27th Special Operations Wing commander. “By showing their support of our Air Commandos, Eastern New Mexico University is helping to further strengthen that relationship.”

The game opened with a special tribute to America and those currently serving in the military with a presentation of the colors by members of the Cannon Honor Guard and the singing of the Star Spangled Banner by Tech. Sgt. Amber Fitzpatrick, 43rd Intelligence Squadron, prior to the kick-off.

“I was thrilled to perform the national anthem for the final ENMU game at Blackwater Draw,” Fitzpatrick said. “I loved supporting military appreciation and felt honored to be asked to share in such a memorable community event.”

After four quarters of play, the Greyhounds emerged victorious over the Rams 46-28 for their final game at Blackwater Draw. Players, Coaches and Alumni swarmed down onto the field for photos as Eastern New Mexico University closed the final chapter of the last 47 years of football history at the stadium with a win.
