More than 200 single Airmen congregated at the Landing Zone Dec. 16 to celebrate the holidays with a hearty meal, drawings for gifts such as gaming systems, flat-screen televisions and the opportunity to exchange the spirit of the season with friends and colleagues.

The annual event is sponsored courtesy of nearby Clovis and the Committee of Fifty, a local organization that supports Cannon and its Air Commandos.

“What the Committee of Fifty does pales in comparison to what the Airmen of Cannon do for all of us on a daily basis,” said Stacey Martin, Chairman of the Committee of Fifty. “We are truly grateful for their service and their sacrifice.”

The night was certainly one of laughter and good cheer; filled with dancing, singing, and door prizes.

"Chief Scanlan and I want to thank each and everyone one of you for attending tonight,” said Col. Ben Maitre, 27th Special Operations Wing commander. “Serving in the Air Force was your choice, and that choice sometimes means spending time away from your families and loved ones during the holiday season."

The holiday bash was a tremendous success, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Committee of Fifty members, Sarah and Justin Stagner.

"Cannon Air Force Base has always held a special place in our hearts," Sarah said. “Most of the Airmen here are between the ages of 18 and 20; as a parent, I could not imagine my child being away from home during the holidays and not having someone there to make it more cheerful for them.”
