Another milestone in unaccompanied housing

CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. --  After months of diligent construction efforts, the 27th Special Operations Wing officially cut the ribbon on its newest dormitory facility during a ceremony May 18.

With the number of unaccompanied Airmen assigned to Cannon still rising, the need for adequate facilities such as this are in high demand to continuously improve the quality of life for dorm residents.

This $20.5 million project began in August 2014 and was completed 175 days prior to the original expected completion date; which is great news for current residents scheduled to occupy the new dorm as this facility will effectively end double-occupancy for the wing.

"First off, thank you to the entire team responsible for helping finalize this project; you have helped deliver a premier facility to this premier installation that enables us to more effectively execute specialized airpower,” said Lt. Col. Joel Sloan, 27th Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron commander. “This complex provides a dramatic increase to overall quality of life compared to Cannon’s pre-existing dormitories. We just had the honor of hosting Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James who touched on her top three priorities, chief among them taking care of people; that is what this dorm does by providing an environment for our Airmen to thrive.”

The design of the project comes from the U.S. Air Force Unaccompanied Housing Design Guide and Cannon Air Force Base design and construction standards, and follows the Air Force's Dorms-4-Airmen concept. The dorm consists of 144 individual rooms, each with their own private bathrooms. Four rooms make up a quad unit; each unit comes equipped with a full kitchen including an oven, microwave and refrigerator, as well as a washer and dryer. There is also a small common area in each building and private personal storage space for every resident.

According to dorm management, these new buildings are LEED-silver certified by the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program, which means a reduced carbon footprint as well as lower overall operating costs. The building also provides state-of-the-art energy upgrades that utilize solar panels to help power to the facility while reducing the carbon footprint of the installation.
