November is designated as New Mexico Recycling Awareness Month, a state-wide annual event created to promote recycling, waste reduction, composting and buying recycled. It is held in conjunction with the nationwide America Recycles Day campaign, Nov. 15.

More than a celebration, ARD is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to the promotion of recycling in the United States.

"Recycling is no joke!" is the theme for 2012. But seriously folks - recycling is not a joke, it benefits our economy, creates jobs, saves energy and protects natural resources.

Recycling has been around for many years and has proven to be an easy and effective way to manage waste. According to the ARD website, www.americarecyclesday.org, the average American generates about seven and a half pounds of waste each day - nearly one and a half tons per year!

The more people recycle, the more material is available for products we all use daily. So how does this help the environment? In addition to not going into landfills, using recycled material means that manufacturers have to take fewer raw materials from the environment. This saves a lot of energy and helps preserve natural habitats as well as create jobs.

Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., offers many avenues to reduce, reuse and recycle. Air Commandos and members of the Cannon community are encouraged to recycle paper, plastic, glass and aluminum products to reduce greenhouse gases, while conserving precious landfill space.

Cannon is committed to preserving the environment through offering comprehensive recycling services. Members are encouraged to do the same by utilizing recycling convenience centers located behind the Base Exchange and southwest of the Pecos Trail Dinning Facility.

The Air Force is also dedicated to protecting and respecting our natural resources. As part of our ongoing Win the War against Waste campaign, an initiative to reduce solid waste, all our active duty members, civilian employees and their family members are encouraged to support ARD by renewing your commitment to recycling.

Visit the ARD website to fill out a pledge card or visit the ARD booth at The Exchange from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Nov. 15.
