Diamond Notes: Take pride in PT uniform Published July 7, 2011 By Master Sgt. Sheronne King 27th Special Operations Component Maintenance Squadron CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- While at a fast food restaurant I saw a picture of one of their employees highlighting the correct wear of their uniform. I was amazed that a fast-food restaurant had emphasized the importance of wearing a uniform correctly and having the workers present a professional image. I wondered, as Air Force Airmen, do we strive to present the same image at all times? Upon scanning the formation at our monthly Commando Runs, the answer I found is "NO"! When it comes to our physical training uniform, violations happen frequently and are seldom corrected. I see many people work hard to ensure their service dress and mess dress uniforms are worn correctly. We, as peers and supervisors, scrutinize our troop's uniforms for correct medals, badges, and appropriately sized rank. However, many fail to take a stand with PT gear. Proper wear instructions are outlined in an interim change that's replace guidance in Air Force Instruction 36-2903, Figure 2.6. This standard needs to be adhered to. It's everyone's responsibility to ensure that they are familiar with this information, share this knowledge, and correct those who violate this regulation. These regulations are: Footwear - is to be conservative (plain, no bright/loud colors or excessive ornamentation). Athletic shoes will be worn. Socks - will be white and may have small trademark logos. PT shirt - both short and long-sleeved shirts must be worn tucked into shorts/pants at all times. Since the long-sleeved shirt and the PT sweater are available, no undershirt is authorized under the short-sleeved shirt. Do not push, remove, or cut sleeves on the long-sleeved shirts. Shorts - both short and full length solid black or dark blue spandex may be worn and visible under the running shorts. Lining may be removed. Jacket - will be zipped at least halfway between the waistband and collar. Sleeves will end within 1 inch of wrist. Pants - waistband will rest at or within 2 inches of the natural waistline. Both pant legs will extend below the ankles and will be zipped within 1 inch of the bottom. Sunglasses - are authorized in PT gear. However, they are not authorized in formation. Sunglasses will not be worn on top of head or around neck. Mixing and Matching - Do not mix/match old PT gear with the improved PT gear. Undergarments - Appropriate undergarments are required and will be worn. Headphones - As per the wing commander's policy, headphones during PT are only authorized on the track near the fitness center or the approved running track in Chavez West. Cold Weather Accessories - may be worn outdoors only. --Knit watch caps will be plain, solid black or sage green without logos --Gloves will be plain solid black or dark blue without logos --Scarves/Earmuffs will be solid black or dark blue; earmuffs may wrap around top/rear of head --Green/Black fleece is not authorized to be worn with PT gear We need to ensure that as Air Force professionals we maintain our professional image, and adhere to standards. Take the time to educate yourself and others. The PT uniform should be worn with as much pride as the Airman Battle Uniform and service dress uniform. If you see a violation, correct it.
