A new chapter for the Cannon library

CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. --  The Cannon library held a reopening ceremony at 2 p.m., March 1st, 2018.

The event celebrated the end of the construction that began in December of 2015.

“It’s really exciting and a giant sigh of relief to be open again,” said Melissa Haraugthy, 27th Special Operations Force Support Squadron Library director. “The staff is thrilled to have all this new space.”

The event started off with speeches from Lt. Col. Anthony Pickett, 27th SOFSS commander, and Col. John Boudreaux, 27th Special Operations Mission Support Group commander, talking about the effectiveness of the library and the process that they went through.

“This building comes with all new facilities, and an amazing working staff,” Pickett said.

Col. Stewart Hammons, 27th Special Operations Wing Commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Erik Thompson, 27th SOW command chief, joined the library staff to end the event with a ribbon cutting.

The new additions to the library include an expanded children’s room for more materials and programming, a multi-purpose room intended for group meetings, a larger sitting area and quiet study rooms.

“I’ve been here for 20 years and the most consistent request was for quiet study rooms,” Haraughty said. “And now we have them. It’s something people really wanted and needed. But we’re not done yet.”

New book shelves, furniture and decorations are planned to come and fill in the new space the library has. The new shelving will make room for new sections, such as adult fiction and test preparation.

“It’s amazing that we get to expand and improve what we offer to the community,” Haraughty said.
