Tax season has begun, and those dreading the stress and fees of this period have a far less demanding option. The tax center, found in the legal office at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., will be open from Feb. 3 to April 15 to assist Airmen in filing their income tax returns.

"This service is here to help Airmen because we know it can be expensive and confusing to get your taxes done," said Staff Sgt. Stephanie Sedlack, tax center NCO in charge.

Filing assistance is available to active duty enlisted troops ranking E-1 through E-6, and officers ranking O-1 through O-2.

Airmen should make appointments through their group tax representative. If unaware of their group's representative, the information can be found by emailing or calling the base legal office.

Although the tax center will not assist Airmen looking to file real estate, small business and investment-related tax returns, free assistance is available at the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Office in Clovis, N.M. The Airman and Family Readiness Center can also assist military members in accessing Military One Source, which offers a free version of H&R Tax Cut for qualifying members.

Filing should not take more than an hour, but to ensure quick service, Airmen should bring the following:

· Social security cards and birth dates of taxpayers and dependents
· Spouse, if filing jointly, or powers of attorney
· Last year's tax return
· Routing and account information for direct deposit of refund
· W-2s, 1099s, and 1098s real estate taxes paid, investment income paperwork
· Individual Retirement Account information, even if a Roth
· Education expenses
· Child care expenses
· Any other tax paperwork
