Watering policy emphasized

Because of the need to conserve water during this season of high temperatures and scarce rainfall, base officials emphasize the following watering policy for housing residents:

Watering is permitted on an odd- and even-system that uses the last digits of the house number. Residents in odd-numbered houses can water on odd-numbered days of the month and residents living in houses that end in even-numbered digits will water on even numbers.

"No watering" hours are from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. This prevents burning the grass and excessive water loss through evaporation. Local landscapers recommend that 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch of water every three to four days maintains an established and fertilized lawn. This can be accomplished with watering periods of about 45 minutes.

Officials said that these guidelines may be revised if further watering restrictions are necessary.

For more information, contact the base housing office at 784-7532.

The City of Portales and the Roosevelt County Water Cooperative are requesting voluntary compliance from 801 Housing residents for alternating water days in to meet the high water demands.

The alternating water day schedule is:

· Even-numbered residences - Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays;
· Odd-numbere residences -  Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays; and
· No watering on Fridays
