2/9/2012 - CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- The rapid growing population at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., has created a need for more housing for Airmen, and several dormitory projects are in the works to remedy this. Two aging dorm buildings have undergone major renovations, and two brand new dorms are projected for construction in the coming years.

Substantial improvements to dorm buildings 1156 and 1159 were recently completed to provide a total of 147 upgraded rooms. These on-base living quarters will allow unaccompanied Airmen to take advantage of the multitude of activities and amenities available here at Cannon.

Each building underwent bathroom renovations to provide new showers, toilets, cabinetry, tiling, in-room sinks and upgraded plumbing and piping. Dorm rooms and common areas received a fresh coat of paint, new carpeting, and the heating and air conditioning systems in both buildings were upgraded.

In addition, several quality-of-life projects will complement these newly-renovated dorms, including an Airmen's Pavilion with grills and picnic tables and new furniture for the day rooms. A horseshoe pit and volleyball court will also be constructed by early summer.

Airmen are expected to be completely moved into the renovated dorms by the end of this month. New construction of a 96-person dorm will begin later this year, and a second new dorm is slated to follow in 2013.
